Montague Island

Just off the NSW South Coast, Montague Island (Barunguba) is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and adventure seekers. Located off the coast of Narooma, about 40 minutes from Moruya Holiday Park, this protected nature reserve is home to thriving wildlife, stunning coastal scenery, and rich cultural history.

What to See & Do on Montague Island

  • Meet the Fur Seals – The island is famous for its colony of Australian fur seals, making it one of the best places for snorkeling and diving with seals in NSW.
  • Little Penguin Encounters – Visit at dusk to see one of the largest little penguin colonies in Australia return to shore.
  • Scenic Boat Tours & Kayaking – Explore the island’s dramatic granite cliffs, secluded beaches, and crystal-clear waters with a guided boat or kayak tour.
  • Guided Walks & Whale Watching – Hike to the historic Montague Island Lighthouse, learn about the island’s Aboriginal and European heritage, and spot whales during migration season (May–November).

How to Visit Montague Island

Montague Island is only accessible via guided tours, which depart daily from Narooma. Several local operators, including Montague Island Discovery Tours and Narooma Charters, offer half-day, full-day, and overnight experiences.

Approx. 40 minutes’ drive to Narooma + a short boat ride to the island.
